      这一次的故事是在数年后的未来世界，该年代中战争被为军事请负企业雇所支配，各企业派遣佣兵派遣到各地去作战，而非是由国家来作战，战争成为了企业经营的一个商品，主角 Solid Snake 则是一名潜入到战场中作战的士兵，以对抗这一种名为战争经济的模式。制作人小岛秀夫先前表示，凭借PS3具备的强大处理能力，《合金装备4》将会有非常大幅度的进步，不但环境会随着游戏的过程而不断变化，而且不只是看得到的部分，连看不到的细微部分也会忠实的呈现出来，不再像以往那般制式固定，充分展现出‘无处可藏’的生动感。本作作为《合金装备》25周年纪念作品，新增了之前所没有的奖杯系统。
