02:00An Easy Way To Score A Couple Super-Rare Items In Borderlands 2
Kotaku
I've got a golden ticket!
I've got a golden chance to make my way!

When Charlie Bucket opened up that golden ticket, he probably wasn't thinking that Willy Wonka was going to give him a sweet-ass sniper rifle, or a shield that generates ammo. And yet, in Borderlands 2, a similar golden key can give you those very things.

I'm late to the party on the whole golden key thing. I got a press copy of the game, which is the same as a pre-ordered copy, and so it came with a golden key. Immediately upon arriving in Sanctuary, I found a big weapon container.

"Yay," I thought. "A weapon container!"

I did what you usually do with weapon containers in this game: I opened it. Inside were two beautiful sniper rifles, far more glorious than anything I had picked up in the first few levels of the game. I used one of those sniper rifles for the next six or eight hours of the game, until I finally found something better.

I didn't know at the time that I'd used my one and only golden key, which allows me to open that single loot chest and get two super-rare pieces of gear. I figured it out much later, and felt a little disappointed. I wanted another golden key!

Fortunately, there's a really easy way to get one. (Well, there is also a hack that lets you generate infinite keys, but I haven't tried that, as well as an Xbox glitch, but I don't want to go THAT far, and I'd imagine that stuff will be patched out of the game eventually, anyway.) My way involves no trickery or profile.bin finagling.

It's simple—so simple, that I'm sure you hardcore Borderlands 2 players have already done it. But if you haven't, I thought I'd let you know: All you have to do is sign up for Gearbox's free "Shift" service and you'll get a free golden key. You can even just delete your account immediately afterwards, if you don't like having that kind of extraneous gaming account (I sure don't.)

Here's how: First, go to Gearbox's "Shift" online service and sign up. You'll get a confirmation email, so go ahead and confirm.

Then, go into your Borderlands 2 game and find the "Shift Code" option. You won't have to enter a Shift code—you'll just have to enter the login info you just made.

You'll be prompted to enter a code, but you already have your free golden key. When you boot up the game, you should see this dialogue box:

Hooray! You can now go get a sweet piece of kit anytime you want.

If you don't want to keep your shift account, it's very easy to delete:

And there you have it. I got a super powerful shield that sometimes will absorb bullets and add to my ammo count. Sweet!

00:55Borderlands 2 Captain Scarlett DLC releases October 16
PC Gamer

As we reported yesterday, some clever devils had ferreted out evidence of the Borderlands 2 DLC by digging through PS3 trophies and Steam files. Official confirmation has now been made: the "Captain Scarlett and her Pirate's Booty" DLC will arrive October 16, and take place in the new and counter-intuitively arid location of Oasis. Despite the piratical theme, according to Gearbox's head man, Randy Pitchford, the location "is more like Tatooine than an ocean". A new vehicle, the sand-skiff, should feature along with giant sand worms and a new currency, seraph crystals.

This is the first of four DLC treats for Borderlands 2 fans, and each comes with a $9.99/£6.20 price tag. Alternatively, you can get them as a job-lot with the season pass, costing $29.99. Other details for the expansion are scant, with the recent round of hands-on demonstrations embargoed until Monday lunchtime. While you wait for our impressions of the expansion, here's a picture of a sand-skiff and some box art for you:

2012年10月11日Borderlands 2's First, Pirate-Packed Campaign DLC Is Out October 16
Kotaku
Rumors swirled yesterday about Borderlands 2's first piece of big downloadable content. They're true. The game's first official campaign add-on is all about pirates.

It's called Captain Scarlett and her Pirate's Booty. It will take you to an entirely new area of Pandora, a wasteland that was once a beautiful resort by the ocean called Oasis. There you will meet new characters, embarking on a journey to find Captain Scarlett's treasure and battling pirate bandits and sand worms along the way. Don't worry, you can run most of them over with a sand skiff, the DLC's new vehicle (pictured below).

The DLC will be out on October 16th—same day as the original release date for the Mechromancer character class—and available for $10 on the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Or, if you have the $30 season pass, it comes included with that bundle. Hooray!

We'll have hands-on impressions of the campaign DLC next Monday.

Yes, I know some of those words, Gaige.

The third ECHO recording released by Gearbox—erm, Gaige—today reveals new improvements in the DT project. Until, that is, Gaige interrupts her monologue with news that her school/science project rival seems to be ripping off her mech designs. The result is the humorous rant you can listen to above.

The Mechromancer class is already available to download, and you can read my impressions of her here.

Listen to the first and second ECHO recordings.

2012年10月11日Borderlands 2 DLC expansion revealed as “Captain Scarlett and her Pirate’s Booty”
PC Gamer

Borderlands 2 looks like it will receive a piratically-themed expansion, if the sleuthing of PS3Trophies is anything to go by. The PS3 version of the game received a title update yesterday, and eagle-eyed members of the community quickly spotted a number of extra trophies (otherwise known as "achievements" to me and thee) which made reference to an expansion titled "Captain Scarlett and her Pirate's Booty".

Pseudo-spoilery details beyond the jump.

The achievements are Treasure Hunter, for completing the mission "X Marks the Spot"; Gadabout, for discovering all named locations in Oasis and the surrounding Pirate's Booty areas; and Completionist, for completing all Pirate's Booty side missions.

This all points to an expansion which introduces substantial new areas - as does the digging among some Steam files by members of the Gearbox forums. They've turfed up further details of what we might expect from the DLC, though it's stressed that this is not representative of whatever final release Gearbox puts out. The additions have been interpreted as follows: a new head for each class, a new rarity level, new items and weapons, a bunch of new bosses, multiple raids and more.

Hopefully, Gearbox will announce something concrete in the future, not that they really need to hurry - we're still busy happily stomping around with the Mechromancer.

Spotted via Joystiq.

2012年10月10日Borderlands 2 Update Hints That The Game's First DLC Pack is All About Pirates
Kotaku

Achievements and trophies added in yesterday's patch for the PC and PS3 versions of Borderlands 2 hint at a new piece of downloadable content called "Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate's Booty."

Gamers on NeoGAF and other big message boards are reporting the details. Here are the three trophies, as posted on both GAF and PS3Trophies, among others:

Treasure Hunter - Completed the mission "X Marks the Spot"
Gadabout - Discovered all named locations in Oasis and the surrounding Pirate's Booty areas.
Completionist - Complete all Pirate's Booty side missions.

Folks posting on the Gearbox forums have also discovered some details via files in the PC version:

- Each class gets a new head.
- New rarity level? (Level 6, "Seraph")
- New items/weapons. (such as the Blood Relic, Anshin Evolution Shield, Scarlet's Greed, 12 Pounder, Little Evie, Stinkpot, and more!)
- Lots of bosses and multiple raids (3)! (such as Scarlett, the Leviathan, Hyperius the Invincible, and Master Gee the Invincible)
- Covering someone in condiments!

Here's a (spoilerific!) dump of all the dialogue files.

2012年10月10日Looks Like There's a Problem With Borderlands 2's Compatibility Update [Update]
Kotaku
We're getting emails from people who own Borderlands 2 on Xbox 360, saying that they can't download the new Mechromancer compatibility update.

Seems that, when prompted to download the new content, they're being greeted with the above message.

My advice? You might have to sit tight. This is the same message you get when trying to access content that's not actually live yet; I'd wager somebody at Microsoft forgot to flip the switch putting the files up for download.

Poor Borderlands 2. It hasn't had the best day for updates.

UPDATE - Turns out this is for the game's compatibility pack, not the Mechromancer DLC.

2012年10月9日Some Players Say New Borderlands 2 DLC is Erasing Their Badass Stats [UPDATE]
Kotaku
Players on both the 360 and PC platforms (PS3 seems to also now be available appears to not be available for download yet) are reporting bug issues with the latest patch and download necessary to play as Borderlands 2's latest character, Gaige.

According to threads on both the official Gearbox forums and Giant Bomb's, some players are experiencing a loss of their Badass rank, which was actually a problem players had even before this update. Whether this is a return of the bug, or simply previously unaffected players experiencing the bug for the first time isn't clear.

Others are reporting more extensive issues, like the loss of character skins, golden keys, and full saves.

We've tried replicating the problem on our end on the Xbox 360, but everything appears in order. Let us know if you have problems in the discussions below, and maybe hold off on downloading the patch and Mechromancer until this clears up.

Update: Mike Fahey says his progress on the PC version seems just fine, too.

We've reached out to 2K on the matter and will update if we hear back.

Update: 2K responded to Kotaku with this official statement, clarifying that the patch/Mechromancer download that released today have nothing to do with the bugs in question:

2K and Gearbox have been working steadily to fix a bug reported to us by fans that resets Badass Rank, and while this bug has only been affecting a very small number of players worldwide and does not affect the ability to play Borderlands 2, addressing this issue is still very important to us. We ask that players who have experienced this issue to email us at profiles@gearboxsoftware.com with as many details as possible to help us gather additional information so that we can squash this reported bug.

Coincidentally, a patch was released today and the fifth playable character class, Gaige the Mechromancer, became available for purchase and download today across PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC via Steam. The patch and the Mechromancer downloadable character class are in no way related to the Badass Rank issue, and fans can feel confident when downloading either item. A further compatibility update will follow in the coming days to address connectivity issues between those who have the Mechromancer and those who do not. Full release notes for today's patch can be read here: Xbox 360, PS3, PC.

2012年10月9日You Can Now Download Borderlands 2's Mechromancer DLC
Kotaku
Gearbox surprised fans with an early release of the Mechromancer DLC that was originally planed for an October 16th release. But instead we get it a week early.

And get it you should, because the Mechromancer is a powerful, versatile, spunky character with an amazing robotic bodyguard at her disposal.

But a specific time when the DLC would be available wasn't initially announced. So this is your friendly public service announcement that you should now be able to download the DLC from the game's menu (we've tried on PC and Xbox 360). Let us know if there are any difficulties!

Update: Proceed download with caution.

2012年10月9日Borderlands 2: Mechromancer DLC releases today, plus nifty interactive skill tree
PC Gamer

The Mechromancer, Borderlands 2's fifth character class, has been waiting in the wings for a few weeks now, polishing her pet robot Deathtrap in anticipation of the day she'll finally be allowed to play with her other classmates. Well, that day is today - Gaige is crashing down on Pandora early, ahead of her previously scheduled October 16th debut. To celebrate her arrival, Gearbox have released another of their lovely interactive skill trees, giving the the perfectionists among us a chance to map out her character development in advance.

Having played around with the skill tree a fair bit, we get the impression that the Mechromancer is acting as a sort of unofficial easy mode, providing you choose the right upgrades. For people who can't shoot straight, the Close Enough skill will cause bullets to ricochet off walls and into nearby enemies, albeit with a notable damage reduction. Cooking Up Trouble, meanwhile, grants regenerative health, providing your magazine is full. Neither skills are likely to turn the game into a cakewalk, but they might make it easier going in the beginning, particularly for solo players. Both skills reside in the health and shield-focused Best Friends Forever tree. The others - Little Big Trouble and Ordered Chaos - are a little more esoteric, but they essentially revolve around the elements and causing chaos, respectively.

Gaige's real value, however, lies in her giant robo-chum Deathtrap, who can be summoned to the battlefield at the touch of a button. As with Axton and his Sabre Turret, you're essentially getting a two-for-one deal with the Mechromancer class, meaning they should make a pretty useful addition to any vault-hunting group. We'll know for certain when the DLC lands later today, for the low, low price of free to anyone who pre-ordered Borderlands 2. The rest of us will have to fork over £7.99 for the privilege.

2012年10月9日Surprise: Borderlands 2's Mechromancer Will Arrive Early. And She's Great.
Kotaku
Don't you just love having a pet?

In the first Borderlands you could satiate your need for a cuddly companion by playing as Mordecai, the sniper expert who was always accompanied by Bloodwing. Depending on the skill tree you chose, Bloodwing's abilities ranged from deadly to unfairly deadly. I went for unfairly deadly. It was awesome.

So far in Borderlands 2, though, the closest thing you could get to cuddles is Axton's turret. The turret is something of a stand-in girlfriend. But regardless of Axton's cute nicknames and weird love for her, the turret isn't comparable to something more personified.

Enter Deathtrap, the hulkish amalgamation of hovering metal scraps that whispers ominous catch phrases while doing your dirty work. Gaige—the character you play as who controls DT—is a Mechromancer, and Deathtrap is your science project turned bodyguard.

Gaige herself feels like a cross between Lilith—with her red hair and spunky attitude—and Tiny Tina—with her small frame and the whole "being an insane genius" thing. Deathtrap makes her a very powerful character, maybe more so than any of the other four vault hunters.

Gaige is a strong, versatile character and a welcome addition to the new set of vault hunters in Borderlands 2. She even adds to the enormous list of easter eggs already in the game, which a cursory glance at her skill trees will prove. She's like an outspoken, pixie Pippi Longstocking with a can-kick-ass attitude. And she has a giant, fearsome robot on her side that can shoot laser beams at her enemies. But really this new class is all about the mech component, as your coolest skills will at least in some way involve DT. And that's wonderful, because he feels like my big, cuddly, bear bodyguard and I love sending him to slaughter anyone or thing that stands in my way.

This is also the first time developer Gearbox is introducing a character whose skill tree can be specialized to accommodate the needs of a less skilled first-person shooter player. The Best Friends Forever skill tree focuses on alleviating the stress of damage to your health, shields, and even crappy aim. You can train Deathtrap to regenerate your (and your teammates') shields, and you can program your guns to ricochet bullets off the ground where you shot it to bounce to the enemy where you meant to shoot it.

As an experienced first-person shooter player, I still found the tree entertaining and useful without being too hand-holdy. The benefit of regenerating health on a full magazine isn't so far from how I chose to spec my siren, Maya, to heal under certain similar met circumstances.

That's not to say that Gaige, the Mechromancer class, was built as a strictly introductory character. In fact, she's simultaneously the newbie class as well as the hardcore class. The Ordered Chaos skill tree is a bit more complicated to understand, but gives the player more to consider in the midst of murdering bandits and bug creatures.

Let's dig into this skill tree a bit.

Do you get in the habit of reloading your gun immediately after a firefight cools down? I tend to do that, to be at my most prepared for the next firefights that I'll surely face. But with the Ordered Chaos skill tree, you'll want to reload as little as possible. If you let the magazine empty and reload itself automatically, you'll gain a stack of something called anarchy. This means that your accuracy is slightly lowered, but your hit damage is slightly raised. Continue to let your gun reload on its own, and you gain more anarchy stacks, meaning further decreased accuracy and further increased damage. By the time you start racking up until the 80s, 90s and more, you'll barely be able to shoot Face McShooty point blank in the face. But when you finally do, you'll do upwards of 1k damage [update: I should mention this was at a roughly level 20 character who was doing far less damage].

Or you can specialize the anarchy tree to use up anarchy stacks for a buff that increases accuracy and fire rate for your weapons. But you'll be continuously sacrificing your stacks of anarchy while that's activated. So instead of conserving the stacks to rack up the damage you can do, you can opt to let the stacked anarchy give you these buffs. Best of all is that you can turn anarchy stacking on and off by simply changing up how you play based on your needs.

The in-between skill tree—Little Big Trouble—is all about elemental damage, particularly shock damage. It was my instinct to play with that tree first, because I like to wrap enemies in slag and shock them with electricity. I built this tree to include a shock wave, which sends out a circle of electricity around me every time I would reload. I'd get into the habit of running up to enemies while reloading to make use of that skill. Many cackles were had.

Perhaps the niftiest detail that Gearbox included with the duo is that depending on how you spec Gaige, Deathtrap will be adorned very differently. He'll have blades on his back, and stickers on his chest that reflect which tree you've decided to upgrade your Gaige in.

Remember how in my review I said that your Maya may be different than my Maya? That variety in a single character I attested to goes even further for Gaige. You can specialize her and DT to the point of playing in a completely different style.

Playing with the noobie tree, I hung back more to let Deathtrap regenerate my shields and ward off threats. I'd shoot at ceilings above where I knew enemies were so that my bullets would ricochet to shoot them. Playing with anarchy, though, I had a happier trigger finger, thirstily hunting for my next target. I'd play a minigame with myself to see how high I could get the stacks up to (it's sometimes hard to resist reloading on instinct). I also opted for a shotgun with a smaller magazine, that way I'd be reloading a lot more often and therefore building anarchy stacks a lot quicker. That middle skill tree that focuses on elemental damage forced me to keep the extra damage possibilities in mind. I'd have to remember to use a certain weapon or rely on a certain ability (like reloading) that I loaded up with extra damage.

The selection actually makes me a little nervous, wanting to play a combination of all three at once. Decisions are hard, guys.

But once you make your decision, one thing will remain true: Gaige is a tough chick, and her companion Deathtrap even more so. He can be a little slow to catch up with you (though that can also be upgraded in a specific skill tree) but he can float up to reach places you can't. And he stays out on the field with you for a long enough while to wipe out plenty of enemies. Sometimes too many enemies. Like when he killed a boss before I could even go up and look at it in its ugly face. I wanted to see its ugly face first! But you know what, Deathtrap? I wouldn't have it any other way.

The final raspberry (I don't like cherries as much) on this cake is that Gearbox decided to release the DLC early. So while it was originally slated for an October 16th release, players on all platforms—Xbox 360, PS3, PC—will be able to download the Mechromancer by the end of today (October 9th). And you should, because she's great.

PC Gamer

I just can't seem to master lobbing splodes in Borderlands 2, but this devastating Legendary MIRV/Bouncing Bettie Hybrid grenade mod might just help my inept throwing arm. Spotted over at Kotaku, the "Rolling Thunder" mod is a loot drop from Wilhelm, the boss at the, uh, end of "End of the Line". Video within!

"As you can see the mod is designed to make a single grenade bounce multiple times (up to 15) while creating an explosion on each impact," says the mod's discoverer, 5haow5. "Once the grenade is finished it will detonate and scatter the smaller grenades in a circle."

Yep - I think even I might hit something with that. What have you found in the game? Got any faves? Post details of your outlandish mods and spectacular shooters in the comments!
