1890年12月29日，由James W. Forsyth率领第七骑兵团的500美国骑兵对印第安人苏族（Sioux）的部族拉科塔（Lakota）进行屠杀。
美国政府为了保护淘金人的安全，驱赶当地印第安人。当时拉科塔部族被包围在南达科他州的伤膝河（Wounded Knee）附近，印第安人已经照要求交出武器。但是Forsyth上校认为仍有一部分武器未交出，命令士兵搜查。据说有一名听力障碍的印第安人“黑郊狼”（Black Coyote）不明白这些士兵的意图，在争执中发生了枪支走火。美军士兵随后开火，无差别的射杀手无寸铁的印第安人。此次事件共有大约300个拉科塔人（包括妇女和小孩）在屠杀中死亡，美军同时也有25名士兵死亡，其中很多是被友军自伤

这首歌的原作者名叫Ada R. Habershon，1861年出生于英国，是个虔诚的基督徒。后来她去美国访问，受人嘱托写下了很多圣歌，Will The Circle Be Unbroken就是其中的一首。她死于1918年。
后来，就像很多那个时候的教堂歌曲一样，这首歌流落民间，被专程去乡下采集民歌的A.P.Carter听到。这个Carter是个类似王洛宾的角色，他和妻子Sara，以及Sara的表妹Maybelle一起组成了一支小乐队，取名Carter Family（卡特家族乐队）。这支乐队被Victor Talking Machine唱片公司的星探Ralph Peer相中，该公司为他们出版了一大批唱片，轰动美国南方，被称为美国乡村音乐的鼻祖，并成为美国乡村音乐名人堂的第一支入选乐队。
