1. Windows 95/98/NT
1.1. Microsoft DirectX
Nox is a Microsoft DirectX application. Version 7.0 of Microsoft DirectX is included on the CD and you have the option to install it when Nox is installed.
Under some early versions of Windows 95, DirectX 7.0 cannot be installed directly from the Nox installer. If this occurs, please run DXSetup.exe located on the CD in the DXSetup folder.
All Microsoft DirectX drivers are located in the DXSetup folder off of the root of the CD. To reinstall the Microsoft DirectX drivers go into the DXSetup folder and run DXSetup.exe. You can explore the CD by selecting the CD and choosing the "Explore" option in the Windows File menu. If you have difficulty running Windows 95/98 after these new Microsoft DirectX drivers have been installed, please contact your local Microsoft subsidiary, or write:
Microsoft Customer Sales and Service,
One Microsoft Way,
Redmond, WA 98052-6399, USA
USA telephone: 1-800-426-9400
International telephone: ++1-206-882-8080
1.2. Microsoft Office Toolbar
If you make use of this feature of Microsoft Office and it appears over the game screen when playing Nox you will have to disable the Office Toolbar before playing.
1.3. Microsoft FindFast
There is a utility installed in most Windows systems (Findfast.exe) that will periodically run and catalog all of the Microsoft Office files on your hard drive. When it is doing this check, your computer's performance will be dramatically impaired. You may want to remove it or disable it when running Nox.
1.4. Windows NT 4.0
Nox requires Service Pack 3 or later versions to be installed in order to work with Windows NT 4.0. Please contact your computer manufacturer if you need to get Service Pack 3.
2. Troubleshooting
2.1. Known Video Card Problems.
Video monitor settings may need to be adjusted after installing the Microsoft DirectX video drivers. If you screen distorts, or is shifted horizontally or vertically, you can return it to normal by adjusting the controls on your monitor.
Most video display problems can be corrected by installing the latest drivers for your particular card. Please consult your video card documentation for details on how to get the latest drivers for your card.
Users with ALI chipset based motherboards may experience video or system difficulties with certain video cards under Windows 95, specifically with the Diamond Viper 770 Ultra and the 3Dfx Voodoo 3 (2000, 3000, & 3500). We recommend that you upgrade your operating system to Windows 98 if you experience problems with this combination.
2.2. Known Sound Card Problems.
Most sound card problems can be corrected by installing the latest drivers for your particular card. Please consult your sound card documentation for details on how to get the latest drivers.
2.3. Known DirectX Problems
If another application is using the sound card while trying to install or run the game, a "DXSound Error" will appear. If this error occurs, please close all applications and run the install or game again.
2.4. Virtual Memory Settings
Nox may need to use more RAM than is present on your system. Windows 95/98 automatically takes care of this by using what is known as "Virtual Memory" - which uses space on your hard disk to simulate the memory it needs and swaps data back and forth from your hard disk as required. Windows 95/98 allows you to manually set the amount of hard drive space it uses for Virtual Memory: WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO NOT DO THIS! To let Windows 95/98 manage the Virtual Memory, go to the Windows 95/98 start menu, select 'settingscontrol panel', then double-click 'system', click 'performancefile systemvirtual memory' and then select 'Let Windows manage my virtual memory settings (recommended).'
2.5. Known System RAM problems
Certain systems contain video cards that use system memory as video memory. With these systems, it is possible that Nox will not run properly if you have only 32MB of memory. Since the video card uses system memory, usually 4MB or 8MB, on 32MB machines there is not enough memory left to run the game. In order for Nox to run properly you will need to increase your system memory or use a video card with dedicated video RAM.
2.6. AutoPlay.
If your CD does not AutoPlay when inserted in the drive, you may have this feature disabled. To Enable AutoPlay, right click on 'My Computer' and select 'Properties' then 'Device Manager'. Select your CD-ROM drive and click 'Properties'. Select 'Settings' and check the 'Auto insert notification' box.
2.7. 16 bit CD-ROM drivers
Nox may fail to start if there is a 16 bit CD-ROM driver loaded from the AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS. If you have references to MSCDEX or equivalent drivers then try removing them from your autoexec.bat and config.sys files. Windows 95/98 does not generally need these drivers to work and in most cases will actually perform better without them.
2.8. CD-Changers and Multi-Drivers
Nox does not support multiple CD-ROM drives or CD-changers and assumes that you only have one CD-ROM drive. If you have more than one CD-ROM drive, you should insert the Nox CD in the first CD drive letter. For example, if you have CD drives E:, F: and G:, your Nox CD should be inserted into the E: drive.
2.9. Choppy movie performance
If you find that the movie performance is choppy or jerky, try reducing the Windows 95/98 CD caching by going to the Start/Settings/Control Panel and double-clicking the System applet. In the System Properties dialog, click the Performance tab and then click the File System button. From the File System Properties dialog, click the CD-ROM tab and note the Supplemental Cache Size setting (so that you can reset the cache size if need be). Now set the Supplemental Cache Size to Small. This should have a marked effect on movie performance.
You can hold down either SHIFT key to skip the intro movies, if you experience problems.
2.10. Power Saving Modes
It is possible that your computer loses connection to your ISP due to long periods of inactivity. Sometimes this is caused by the sleep mode in your " ower Saving" options. This can cause problems during game play or when connected to Westwood Online. To avoid any problems please disable your screen saver or power-saving modes when running the game.
2.11. Periodic Slowdowns
If periodic slowdowns occur while playing Nox and the CD is not being accessed please insure that there are no other applications running during your game session. This includes anti-virus software.
2.12. Game Updates and Patches
Nox contains an auto-updating feature. Updated versions of the game will be announced To you when playing Nox on Westwood Online. When an updated version of the game is available you will be able to receive it and automatically have it installed, if you wish. If you do not intend to play Nox on Westwood Online then please check HTTP://www.westwood.com for update information.
2.13. Known Mouse Problems
Nox supports the Microsoft IntelliMouse with 3-button mouse wheel. You can bind the middle mouse button to game actions using the Input Config screen under the Options menu. The default configuration maps JUMP to this button; you can also roll the wheel up and down to scroll spell sets and inventory.
Nox supports the Logitech Mouse Man Plus. Under Windows 95, some interface elements such as the Inventory screen will scroll back when the mouse is taken off the scroll bar. If you experience problems with the mouse wheel while using a Logitech Mouse Man Plus on Windows 98 then try installing the latest Microsoft Mouse drivers. If you have Windows 95 then you'll have to press CTRL+ALT+DEL once, select 'Em_exec' and click 'End Task' to disable 'Em_exec'. This will eliminate pointer problems in menus, but you won't be to use the wheel on the mouse.
Nox does not support the Everton Winpoint mouse.
2.14. Task Switching
You can task switch from Nox to other Windows applications by pressing ALT+TAB. If you are running Windows 95 you may experience a problem with Windows 95 DynaRes. If this happens we recommend that you do not ALT+TAB to other applications from Nox or upgrade your operating system to Windows 98.
3. Gameplay Issues
3.1. Armor
3.1.1. Shields
Unlike other armor items, shields do not have an armor value. This is because a shield offers no protection unless you use it. A shield can block 100% of a ranged or melee attack. It won't protect you from the splash damage or area damage of large monsters and certain spells. You cannot be moving or attacking. You must stand still and face the attack. Your shield will take damage. Check your shield's durability by using the Identify option (magnifying glass) in your Inventory. Damaged shields should be repaired or replaced when you encounter a Shopkeeper.
3.2. Weapons
3.2.1. Blocking an attack
Warriors can equip a shield along with a one handed weapon. You can block a melee attack by facing your attacker. You can also deflect missile attacks. The Great Sword will block both melee and ranged attacks when you stand and face your attacker, just like a shield. Spellcasters take heart, the Staff will block melee attacks (but not missiles) when you stand and face your attacker.
3.2.2. Two handed weapons
You cannot use a shield while fighting with a two-handed weapon. Two handed weapons include: Staves, Ogre Axe, War Hammer, and Great Sword. When you equip a two-handed weapon your shield will be unequipped. If you switch to a one-handed weapon using the Weapon Swap 'V' key you must equip the shield manually.
3.3. Spells
3.3.1. Spells with Variable Mana Cost
Certain spells have a variable mana cost. The mana cost in the spellbook is listed as '*' for these spells. The spells are: Drain Mana, Channel Life, Obliteration, Greater Heal, Energy Bolt, and Lightning. They take all available mana until stopped or mana is empty. If a variable mana cost spell is placed in a Trap then a fixed amount of mana is deducted and a lesser form of the spell is cast when the trap goes off. Note: some spells are not allowed in Traps or Bombers.
3.3.2. Spell tracking
Certain spells will track nearby targets when you cast them on others. Once invoked, these spells will seek out a target close to you. If you have a target specified under your directional cursor then it will be chosen first, if appropriate. Hostile spells won't target friends, beneficial spells won't target enemies.
3.3.3. Owned Beasts and Map Transitions
When you cross a map boundary all monsters that you own (charmed, summoned, or bought) will appear next to you in the loaded map. This also applies to friends that you are rescuing.
3.4. Options
3.4.1. Screen Resolution
You can change the screen resolution under the Options menu. This will only change the resolution during game play, it will not change the resolution of the menu screens or movies.
3.4.2. Improving Performance
You can improve the performance by adjusting the video options found in the Options Menu. Turning off options like "Soft Shadow Edge" will speed up the framerate for a slight sacrifice in visual appeal. You can also decrease the screen resolution or the game window size. If you've installed the 8-bit art assets you can also switch to 8-bit mode, although you'll miss some of the colored lighting effects. Player's with newer and faster machines may want to increase the screen resolution. If you're not sure what to set you can select the AUTO CONFIG option. This will examine your PC configuration and make optimal settings for your machine. You should run this whenever you change your PC's configuration.
3.4.3. Nox Compatibility Mode
If you are unable to run Nox after modifying game options/settings, launch the program via 'Nox Compatibility Mode' from the Start Menu. This will reset your game options to their default and most compatible settings.
3.4.4. Gamma Adjustment (Lighting)
In-game gamma (lighting) adjustment is supported in 8-bit on all machines. It is also supported in 16-bit (Windows 95/98 only) provided that there is hardware support on the video card. Check with your video card manufacturer to determine if you card supports gamma adjustment.
3.5. Multiplayer
3.5.1. Seeing LAN games while connected to the Internet.
If your computer has both a dial-up connection and a LAN connection, you will be unable to see Nox multiplayer LAN games while dialed out to your ISP. To remedy this situation, disconnect from your ISP before searching for LAN games.
3.5.2. Banning a player from a game.
When you select a user to be banned from the Server Access menu it will ban them using their IP address and Nox serial number. If you manually type in their player name it will only ban that name from playing in your games.
3.5.3. Server Only
When you run a Server Only game (via "nox -serveronly" from the command line), you can improve performance by closing all active menus and the player ranking list.
When setting the maximum players for a server running in server-only you should account for the server in your amount. For example, if you would like to set up a server-only server to host 31 clients, you should set your Max Players (Server->Access->MaxPlayers in the server options menu) to 32.
3.5.4. Server.rul file
When a Nox server is started in server-only mode, the game will process a server.rul file (if one exists) in the Nox root directory. This rule file can be used to batch execute a series of console commands to automatically configure your game and launch the initial map. In addition to the standard set of console commands, two other important commands are accessible to server: set team and set mode. After set team (optional) and set mode (mandatory), the server.rul file should contain a call to 'load <mapname>'. Where mapname is the name of a map in the Maps subdirectory of Nox. After the initial map, 'map cycle' mode is used regardless of the server menu's setting. If there is no server.rul, Nox will allow the server to configure the game via in-game menus.
3.5.5. Set Team command
This will create two teams, 'Red' and 'Blue'. For games requiring teams (CTF, Flagball), you must explicitly create teams before loading a map that supports teams.
3.5.6. Set Mode command
Usage: 'set mode <game mode>'. Where <game mode> may be one of the following: 'Arena', 'Elimination', 'CTF', 'KOTR', or 'Flagball'. This will set the mode of the next map launched. After a call to set mode any subsequent maps loaded must support the specified mode.
3.5.7. Elimination Sudden Death
Once an Elimination game goes into "Sudden Death", all players begin to take damage continuously (proportional to their maximum health). Players cannot heal themselves during this period.
3.5.8. UDP port
Nox retail servers use UDP port 18590. Official Nox servers use ports 18590 - 18599. For those of you behind proxies/firewalls or using NAT, Consult your network administrator or your documentation for details on configuring your system to connect to Nox.
3.5.9. Nox Version and Joining Games
When trying to choose a server to join, you may choose to filter out servers running a different version of Nox than yours. This filter is included in the "default filter" and may be manually enforced by selecting the checkbox next to "Your version number does not match the server's version number" in the "user-defined filter".
3.5.10. Clan Games
If you join a clan game, but are not part of a clan, you will be placed in Spectator mode, a variation of observer mode. In spectator mode, you'll be able to watch the game, but not participate in it. Note that you may be kicked off the server in favor of active clan players.
3.5.11. Japanese & Korean Input for Chat
While building some characters you may have to press ENTER to confirm the last character and then ENTER again to send your chat message. If the last character is punctuation or a space then you won't encounter this problem.
3.5.12. Sysop Access
To allow remote sysop access to your Nox server, you must enter a sysop password in the Server->Access tab of the server options menu. Once you have chosen a password, a remote client may gain sysop access by typing "Sysop" from the game console (F1). The client is then prompted for the sysop password. If they enter the correct password, they are granted access to the Nox server and may execute console commands remotely as if they were entered on the server machine. Sysop console commands are in the form of : sysop <command>.
Example : To set the number of lessons to 15 on a server on which you have sysop access, you would input the following command into the console: sysop set lessons 15
3.5.13. Telnet Access
To allow remote telnet access to your Nox server, bring down the console and enter: telnet on <port> Where <port> is the port number on which you'd like to start telnet services.
Nox's telnet implementation is a "tiny" implementation and does not include terminal emulation. When telneted into a Nox server, you may enter commands just as if you were typing into the console. This means that if you are telneted into Nox and type "quit" or "exit", the server will stop! To terminate your telnet session, simply exit your telnet tool.
IMPORTANT: If you enable Telnet access to your Nox server, remember that you must enter a sysop password in Server->Access tab of the server options menu. If you fail to setup a password, ANYONE who knows your telnet port number can telnet into your server and will not be prompted to enter the password.
To turn OFF telnet access, bring down the console and enter: telnet off.

The list below details the modifications that are included in this patch:
1. Warrior Specific:
1.1 Berserker Charge: Berserker charge can no longer be stopped by a weapon dequip (V-key).
1.2 Berserker Charge: If a warrior kills someone with Berserker Charge, the game now immediately recharges this skill so the warrior can immediately do another Berserker Charge.
1.3 Berserker Charge: The warrior can no longer Berserker Charge through any walls and go out of bounds using observer mode.
1.4 Harpoon: The warrior's harpoon has been improved so it works more reliably everywhere.
1.5 Harpoon: The warrior's harpoon has been improved so it tracks enemies in front of the warrior.
1.6 Harpoon: The warrior's harpoon now has a time limit. Once it has latched onto someone, it only lasts a short duration.
1.7 Harpoon: The harpooned player can no longer use jump to escape/break out of being harpooned.
1.8 Harpoon: The warrior harpoon will no longer collide with the harpoon source.
2. Conjurer Specific:
2.1 Bombers: The conjurer may only summon 2 bombers now. If you have an old save game with more than 2 bombers you will still have the additional bombers, but you won't be able to summon any more until you have less than 2.
3. Wizard Specific:
3.1 Energy Bolt &: The game now disallows the use of energy bolt Lightning and lightning at the same time.
3.2 Reflective Shield: The reflective shield now animates.
3.3 Swap Location: When inverted, the Swap Location spells are now automatically destroyed.
3.4 Teleport to Marker: Casting Teleport to Marker on other players is no longer allowed. However, it can still be used on yourself, or in a trap.
3.5 Teleport to Target: It is now safe to use the Teleport to Target spell in a trap. The game will no longer crash.
3.6 Illegal Enchantments: In the solo game, it was possible to become infinitely enchanted with some hostile spells such as anchor and stun. This has been fixed.
3.7 Obliteration: Before, if you save a game while the Obliteration spell is going off, and load this game back up, you won't be able to move or continue with the game. This has been fixed.
4. General Issues:
4.1 Console: Player chat is now shown in yellow in the console to be more readable.
4.2 Cursors: Targeting circles are always blue for friends and friend's monsters, and red for all others. And, friendly monsters have a dot in their team color over their head.
4.3 Custom Hotkeys: The hotkeys for quick-potions now update themselves if the player changes them while in game.
4.4 In Game Map: The overhead map now moves around with the camera location. This allows the map to be correct/current while observing other players.
4.5 Restart after Death: Before, if you had your inventory window open and were holding an item on your cursor when you got killed, the game would prevent all future input from the mouse. This is now fixed.
4.6 Run Enchantment: Players can now attack while enchanted with the Run spell. However, spell casters can no longer continue to cast the following spells when they are enchanted with run: Force of Nature, Drain Mana, Greater Heal, Channel Life, Reflective Shield, Energy Bolt, and Chain Lightning.
4.7 Spell Casting: Before, if you had the GUI off (F11), you couldn't cast some spells "on others" by holding the SHIFT-key. This problem is now fixed. This is only for spells that are allowed to be cast on others; for example, Vampirism.
4.8 Staff of Oblivion: Before, if the user fired the Staff of Oblivion and clicked on a target repeatedly, the Staff of Oblivion would stop using its charges (essentially infinite charges). Now, the staff will continue to drain/use up its mana charges.
4.9 Win 2K Mouse: The mouse now works properly with Windows 2000 / DirectX7. The player will no longer have the "continuous run" problem.
5. Solo Chapters Specific:
5.1All Characters: The game's internal item ID system has been modified to prevent certain lockups caused by multiple items sharing the same ID.
5.2 All Characters: Fixed a problem caused by loading games containing monsters with Force Field on. Sometimes, these monsters would be loaded with infinite shield strength making them impossible to kill. This is no longer possible.
5.3 Warrior - Chap 7: Before, The house across from Maximillian's could be opened by any silver key. The user could've used the silver key from the 2nd level of the tower to open this door. Doing so would often prevent the player from advancing beyond the 2nd level of the tower. Now, the player must use the harpoon to drag the guy inside the house to the door to open the door. This door no longer requires a silver key.
5.4 Warrior - Chap 10: In this chapter, there is a monster that turns from a bat to a knight. Before, if the player hit this monster with the harpoon from afar (only when that creature was in its bat form), the game would sometimes crash to the desktop. This is now fixed.
5.5 Wizard - Chap 1: Fixed the initial Horvath and the Urchins event so it will no longer lockup the game in certain rare instances.
6. Multiplay Specific:
6.1 Advanced Menu: The disabled-spells-list in the advanced menu is now showing reliable information.
6.2 Assisted Kill Credit: The warrior will now be credited with a full kill if he reflects a Force of Nature with the Great Sword which then kills another player.
6.3 Auto Assign Team: With "auto assign" turned on, the game will shuffle the teams after a game has been completed. Teams will no longer be shuffled after exiting a social map.
6.4 Camper Alarm: The new camper alarm shows the camper on the map. This works in much the same way as the Tag spell. No alarm SFX will be played when the camper alarm kicks in.
6.5 Chat Room: Now, Japanese and Korean users can type messages in their own local language in Westwood Online. Players using other language versions of Nox can download the Asian text fonts to see these messages too.
6.6 Console Command: Typing "show motd" on a client no longer crashes the client.
6.7 Console Command: The "set spell <spell name> ON" command now works from the console, and the change is reflected in the advanced menu. For example, to disallow the blink spell, pull down the console using the F1-key, the type "set spell "SPELL_BLINK" off.
6.8 CTF: These spells no longer affect the flag carrier: Blink, Invisibility, Invulnerability, Swap, Teleport to Marker 1/2/3/4, Teleport to Target, and Teleport to Random. However, the flag carrier can still teleport by following other player's teleport wakes.
6.9 CTF: Before, you would only hear the flag capture/drop/taken sounds if you were nearby. Now these events can be heard at full volume by everyone.
6.10 CTF: The game will no longer allow a player to blink to a destination which has line of sight to the enemy flag's home.
6.11 CTF: Flags are now displayed in the overhead map at all times.
6.12 CTF: Stun and Confuse are now disallowed in all CTF games.
6.13 CTF & KOTR: The game now picks a random starting location in KOTR games. The player will no longer respawn at the same location.
6.14 CTF & KOTR: Before, some spells could not be cast when you were carrying the flag, ball, or crown. Now, not only can you not cast those spells, but those spells have no effect on you when cast on you by another player. However, you may now cast one of these restricted spells by placing them in a bomber or trap. Spells affected by this are: Blink, Invisibility, Invulnerability, Swap, Teleport to Marker 1/2/3/4, Teleport to Target, and Teleport to Random.
6.15 Flag Ball: Before, if you had the ball last and you killed the player with the ball, you would not be able to pick up the ball. Now you can pickup the ball in this situation.
6.16 Flag Ball: If a player threw the ball at the enemy flag, and an enemy hit the ball with a fireball, the ball became "owned" by the enemy, and no point was gained if the ball then hit the flag. This has been fixed.
6.17 Game Select Screen: For all Internet games, the multiplay game select screen now defaults to "list" instead of "map".
6.18 Game Name: The default server name has been changed from "NoxWorld" to "User Game".
6.19 Kick/Ban System: Added a simple voting feature to kick unwanted players out of a game. Players can access this via the esc-key. Kicking a player requires 2 votes in a team of 3, 3 votes in a team of 4, or 4 votes for teams of 5 or more.
6.20 Kick/Ban System: Ban is now done using a player's WOL name in all Internet games. The banned player can no longer return to the game by using another in-game name.
6.21 Kick/Ban System: At each map change, the ban list is now saved. Now, if the game goes down for some reason, you can still revert to the last ban list.
6.22 Kick/Ban System: When you get kicked from a server, your character is now automatically saved.
6.23 Lag Compensation: Before, if the server set the lag compensation to minimum and a new player joined the game and started to download the map (which would appear to have the lag of zero), the lag compensation would automatically go to zero, too. Now, the game ignores this while the new player is downloading maps.
6.24 Magic + Normal Shield: Before, if the warrior had a regular shield up and a Force Field on, when the Force Field was destroyed, the warrior's HP would go down to 1 hit point (same for wizard and conjurer). This was wrong, because the warrior was protected by the normal shield under the Force Field. Now, when the Force Field is damaged and goes off, the warrior's HP would stay at the same level if the shield can block the damage.
6.25 Observer Mode: The player can no longer be poisoned while in the observer mode.
6.26 Observer Mode: In an elimination game, the system is now set to auto observe the person who eliminated you, if possible.
6.27 Observer Mode: The conjurer will no longer disappear while observing one of his summoned creatures.
6.28 Observer Mode: Before, the player might not have been able to cycle through all the players while in the observer mode. Now the game allows the player to cycle through all the active players in the game.
6.29 Observer Mode: Before, if you hit spacebar while in observer mode, the camera would "detach" but remain static. Now, when the camera is so detached, it can be moved around with the cursor and right mouse button.
6.30 Observer Mode: Players are now automatically dropped into the observer mode if the system doesn't receive any input for 90 seconds.
6.31 Observer Mode: Now, SFX will play as soon as you join a multiplay game. While in observer mode, you no longer have to cycle to another player to activate the SFX.
6.32 Observer Mode: Now, the player can go into the observer mode after joining a ladder game.
6.33 Pet's Chat Bubbles: Now, charmed and summoned creatures' chat bubbles can only be seen by their owners.
6.34 Proxy Server: Multiple players can join the same game through a proxy server.
6.35 Ranking GUI: Added WOL login name to F9 list for both clients and server. The game now displays each player's name in the following form: <nickname>(<WOL name>). For example: Scoob(TrueScoob), or Flinn(Flinn2501).
6.36 Server Selection: A button has been added on the WOL chat screen to allow the user to change game servers.
6.37 Splash Damage: You will now take damage when hit by your own splash damaging devices such as Fireball or Force of Nature. This is true even if team damage is turned off.
6.38 Team Assignment: After shuffling teams, the game now reselects the player starting locations.
6.39 Team Game: When a player changes teams during a team game, the game now immediately relocates that player.
6.40 Team Game: The game now auto selects a new player start location when the player comes out of observer mode.

The list below details the major features of the Nox Quest game:
1. Maps: If clever, the player can survive countless number of maps. Of course, working together as a team significantly increases the player's life expectancy in these dangerous areas. After completing a map, the player is advanced to another randomly selected one. Every subsequent map is more menacing than the one before (monsters have more hit points and deal more damage). Surviving depends on the player's cleverness, tactics, teamwork and some luck.
2. Ankhs: Ankhs represent the number of "lives" or "continues" that the player has left. The player starts with 3 Ankhs, and can find additional Ankhs in hidden areas and in the shops. Ankhs are shown at the top left corner of the screen. If the player is killed and he has run out of Ankhs, then his game is over. The player can then choose to quit the game, or pay a penalty and continue the current Quest. If the player chooses to pay the penalty and continue with the current Quest, then his score will be reset back to zero, his gold will be reduced by half, and he may lose some items from his inventory.
3. Summoning Obelisks: Summoning Obelisks are everywhere in the Quest game. Through these evil portals, monsters are called forth to challenge the adventuring party. An Obelisk will continue to spawn monsters until it is destroyed. Summoning Obelisks are large stone blocks with a shimmering green ghostly image floating over them.
4. Soul Gates: A Soul Gate is a magical "checkpoint" in the land of Nox. When a player touches a Soul Gate, a special bond is created. If the player should die during his adventure, he will be resurrected next to the last Soul Gate that he touched.
5. Exits: There is only one exit per map, although it may be in a different location than the last time the map was visited. Once a player has entered the exit, the remaining party only has a short time to find the exit. Once all the players have entered the exit, or the timer has run out, the party will advance to the next map. Exits are very large and are filled with reddish orange magical energy.
6. Shops: A shop is always available at the start of each map. These are safe areas for the players to chat, share information, divvy up the loot, repair damaged items, and strategize for the upcoming challenges. You never know what a Shopkeeper may have for sale...
7. Keys: There are two types of keys in the Quest game: Silver and Gold. Silver keys are common keys that are needed to unlock treasure chests and locked doors. Gold keys are very rare and are needed to unlock special passages. Note that unlocking a door or chest consumes a key.
If no generators have been destroyed, and no doors have been unlocked for a long period of time, the party is considered "stuck". If the party becomes "stuck", Key Sharing Mode will be enabled. This mode allows all players to use silver keys from any other player’s inventory to unlock doors with silver locks. Key Sharing Mode is turned off once the current map is completed. A silver key icon at the top left corner of the screen indicates Key Sharing Mode is active. Please note that Key Sharing does not apply to treasure chests, or doors locked with gold locks.
8. Spells & Skills: All players can gain abilities or magical spells in the Quest game. Warriors can use Abilitybooks to learn new skills, whereas Conjurers and Wizards can use Spellbooks to learn new spells. Wizard's spellbooks are blue, Conjurer's spellbooks are green, common spellbooks are yellow, and Warrior's abilitybooks are red.
9. Lore Scrolls: In the Quest game, only Conjurers may use Lore Scrolls.
10. Special Potions: There are many magical potions that can be found during an adventure. These enchant the user with powers that last much longer than their spellbound counterparts. These magical potions can be used by all character types.
11. Trading Gems: Players can buy Trading Gems at the shops. These valuable gems are useful for trading wealth with friends. To give gold to your friend, buy a Trading Gem and give it to him. He can then sell it for the same amount of gold.
12. Automap: The Automap shows all your party members as green dots. This is very helpful in keeping track of your party members' whereabouts. Use this information to stay together as a group.
Party Health: Click on your health meter in the lower right hand corner of your screen to display small health meters next to you and all of your friends. You can also use the F9 function to keep track of the party’s current status. Use these features to help keep your friends alive!
14. Score: Players increase their score by destroying Summoning Obelisks, killing monsters, and finding secret areas. To maximize your score, try to explore the entire map and eradicate any obelisks and monsters you find. As the stage increase, so do the points awarded to the players.
15. WOL Ranking: Only official Westwood Online Quest games are ranked on the WOL Quest Ladder. You can play private games by yourself or with your friends; however, the unofficial games won't be ranked on the WOL Quest Ladder.
16. Save & Load: Your Character File is automatically updated every time you complete a stage and whenever you exit a Quest game. However, keys and glyph (Wizard’s traps) are never saved with your character. As you exit a Quest, your keys will be given to the remaining players left in the game so they can continue with their Quest.
17. Warp Gate: Warp gate can always be found near a shop at the start of each map. Experienced players can use the Warp Gates to quickly advance to the higher stages. In multiplay Quest, all active players must enter the Warp Gate to warp. In order to warp, someone in the questing party must have previously completed the destination stage or higher; else, the warp will fail. Once you have entered the Warp Gate, you can click to exit at any time. A Warp Gate will automatically be closed as soon as a player start the quest.
18. Miscellaneous: - In Quest, using the Blink spell will teleport you back to the last Soul Gate that was touched, not to a random location on the map.
- In Quest, the Conjurer’s bows have infinite number of normal shots.
