This was a joke thread Akela made on the DMC4 board at GF. But then I started to wonder... it's really the most plausible theory on Sparda having a bastard, third descendant.
This is my theory taking off from that.
1 - "Two milleniums ago, there was a war; between the human world, and the other -- the Underworld. But someone from the Underworld woke up to justice and stood up against this legion, alone. His name was Sparda. Later, he quietly reigned the human world and continued to preserve harmony, until his death."
a) After this so called one-demon war against the Underworld and Mundus, Sparda sealed numerous Hell gates around the world, including the Temen-ni-gru where he locked the Force Edge on the other side, thus disguising himself as a human somehow since his powers were locked away along with the sword, except for the (Perfect) Amulet which he made crucial to keep for all that time as it was the key to unlocking its full power -- his very own demonic essence. From that day forth, he decide to use Rebellion and Yamato, with Yamato being his main choice for a replacement of Force Edge. He most likely achieved them from around the world when he was locking up Hell gates. Or maybe he even had them manufactured by blacksmiths whom were either demons like he was, or sorcerers.
b) During these 2,000 years, he remained a secret from humanity with the exception of cults and clans, such as the Vie de Marli. Even though he had sealed numerous gates, he couldn't possibly lock away all the demons on the other side, so he teamed up with those cults/clans/devil hunters and such, in an attempt to keep harmony. He met Matier, whom was probably still a middle-aged woman and a demon hunter as well. She was probably the leader of a great clan at the time.
c) Eventually, he met Eva, probably a few decades before his inevitable aged death. Before that could happen however, he allowed himself to tell her who he really was; his origins and everything, since by now he had become a legend, a myth, and even a fairy tale. They married, and Sparda being relatively human, they had two sons.
So far this is the most obvious as you can get. Now, the new theories play along with DMC4.
2 - Way before any serious wars started, Sparda was still a fully blown demon and had been born and raised in the Underworld in - probably - cruel and strict ways, in an attempt to raise a powerful successor to Mundus' position some day.
a) Being a demon and raised by demons, he was no doubt friends with some of the bosses we've met throughout the series; Beowulf, Bolverk and Berial, for instance, and he might've even "dated" Nevan. Alastor and Ifrit could've been friends of his as well...
b) When the real wars between humans and demons started spiraling out of control, Mundus ordered the strongest demons to attack larger cities, and Sparda was amongst the picked demons for the attack, even though Sparda did not yet know what humans were like and this attack was his very first entry in the human world. Somehow, he disagreed with Mundus' methods and the general brutality his friends displayed. He witnessed the slaughter of humans and freaked out, strongly feeling it wasn't right. Inevitably, he declared war on Mundus and anyone who would stop him. Mundus declared him a traitor and had every single demon at his disposal to destroy Sparda. But he trained him too well. Sparda whooped ass on everybody and then some. In the process, he refused to kill any of his friends, forcing them to accept defeat; he messed up Beowulf's eye, and found himself forced to maul Bolverk so much only his skeleton remained intact. Before he could reach Mundus, a new form of evil appeared before him, the despair of the defeated demons embodied itself before him. Sparda defeated the entity as well before doing the same against Mundus.
However, Nevan was the only demon who he had not needed to fight, since she accepted his decision to rebel, but refused to join his new found resolve. Somehow she still loved him, even though Sparda could no longer retribute the feeling.
c) After he married Eva and Dante & Vergil were already old enough to talk and walk, Sparda was still a protector of humans. Although there weren't as many devil hunters as he once knew, he would still join parties to destroy demons coming from the other side. One day, he met Nevan once again. She explains to him that after he left and sealed her along with the high rank demons, she refused to forget about him. She hated him for what he had done, and at the same time could not shake away the feelings she still had for him. Since she was a succubus, she took the form of a human just for him. She enticed him with romance, having the "just one more time for old times' sake" state of mind. However, she did not tell him she could shapeshift herself to the point of getting pregant like a human, as much as he could impregnate a human himself. After that, they parted ways and he never saw her again.
d) As time went by and his sons grew up, Nevan gave birth to Nero, living so secretly nobody ever knew she existed; even Mundus thought she was dead by then. When Nero was still a baby, she realized she could not raise him by herself. She still was a succubus and being motherly was not in her veins, even though it had been her decision to give birth in the first place. So, she did the next best thing, and abandoned Nero somewhere near Fortuna. I would say Credo's father would find Nero, and decided to adopt him and raise him. Eventually Credo took his father's place in the Order of the Sword and let Nero join as well.
e) When Nevan abandoned Nero, she returned to the Underworld, making up some story to Mundus, like she had been captive for some time and then escaped. And that's why Dante faces her later on in the Temen-ni-gru. She recognized him, but said nothing about the whole thing. Being reminded of Sparda, she let her guard down and ends up losing, or perhaps she knew she'd lose the fight right off the bat (lol near-pun), and then hints to him that she knew Sparda back in the day.
Next up, Nero's Devil Bringer. The following is a transcription from page 7 of the DMC4 manual.
3 - "A number of demons appeared suddenly from the deep within the MItis Forest and attacked the city, destroying a number of houses and inflicting slight injuries to citizens. As luck would have it, Nero was present at the scene. All demons were exterminated. During this incident, a private female citizen who was a travelling companion of Nero's, was injured. Nero himself received a minor injury to his right shoulder."
a) Assuming thus far Nero had never been injured by a demon before, this wound was unexpectidly infected somehow. The demon in question could've been high rank -- one that would've led the demon attack in the first place. Nero instinctively fights back, and wins, but not without being wounded and the Red Queen (his sword) broken. However, a "minor injury" does not justify getting a cast nor having your arm hanging from your neck. He probably lied, saying his arm was much worse, possibly broken, and preferred to have it casted.
b) As days went by, the infection would've gotten worse, but in a non painful or harmful way. His Spardan blood -- so to speak -- acted as a filter and absorbed any power traces from the wound, healing it, and then taking over his arm, transforming it into a Devil Bringer. Eventually he found out about it while he removed the cast. For the first time he realized his arm was not wounded and had gained powers with it. From that point on, he decided to keep his arm casted so not to reveal it to anyone.
c) Needless to say, having the blood of Sparda would just guarantee that his arm would notify him of danger, or anything else that would be related to his demonic blood, such as Dante, and Yamato. That gift allowed him to fix Yamato, which had been in possession of Sparda the longest, and so, his mere presence fixed it.
I'll tell you a better theory for the Devil Bringer.
Vergil was killed in DMC3, his body was destroyed at least. Then, Mundus, being an all powerful Emperor of Hell, he manipulated Vergil's soul and used it to animate a suit of armour which we saw as Nelo Angelo. This is backed up by the History of DMC in DMC4 and the fact that Vergil was able to take Beowulf's soul and transforming it into a weapon without the demon's content, so why should we not assume that Mundus can do the same and even more?
So, in DMC1 Dante defeated Nelo Angelo and his soul was shattered and scattered all over the place. A piece of his soul was later found by the Order inside Yamato, which is coincidently is the key to unlock the hell gate under Fortuna. Agnus then used the soul piece to power the numerous Bianco and Alto Angeles. Another piece was present during the forest scene where Nero was injured. Now, by a force of chance, the piece of Vergil's soul somehow imbued itself into Nero's wound resulting in the deformation of it and the increase of his powers.
Having a piece of Vergil inside him and mingling with his blood technically made Nero of the Sparda lineage. As for Sanctus' remark, I'd say it's just bad writing. As for his origins before the forest incident, Nero was just a regular human orphan.
See? This makes much more sense than your theory.
Dante's age through out the series is most likely this:
Sparda's death - 1-7 (nobody really knows, but we do know that the twins met their father)
Eva's death - 8
DMC3 manga - 18
DMC3 - 19
DMC1 - 28
DMC4 - early to mid 30s
Nero, on the other hand is much younger. I'd say he's 8-10 years younger than Dante, which means he was born around the time of DMC3. Long after Sparda died.
