After the YK32 failed to get approval for military appropriation, Yuma Flats Energy Consortium revamped their pulse pistol weapon for a civilian market for the purposes of home defense. The YK40 pulse pistol offers several advantages over the shotgun, its main competitor in the ballistic category: Less collateral damage to (non-electrical) accidental targets, more resilience against usage wear, and using a common battery cell size usable in a variety of other appliances (wheras a shotgun shell has but one intended purpose). Possible effects upon the target include momentary paralysis, involuntary evacuation of bowels and urinary bladder, and possible disintegration.

The YK40 was only beginning to be distributed nation-wide when World War III broke out.
