Time for tip off
This week, NBA fans have two great basketball games to choose from: 2K Sports' NBA 2K10 and EA Sports' NBA Live 10.Overthe past few years, 2K Sports has easily taken control of thecourt, with excellent gameplay, a terrific presentation and onlinefeatures. However, EA has slowly caught up, with NBA Live 10 the bestin theseries. Of course, there can only be one winner, so we pit thesetwohoops games against each other to see which one takes thechampionship.

Spurs fans have horrible memories of this man, the Lakers Derek Fisher. Click to see more images from the game...
Visuals
Surprisingly, both games have impressive graphics. NBA 2K10 hasexquisite playermodels and courts. The animation also looks incrediblysmooth, especially with the smaller things, like LeBron James'traditional chalkclap or Dwight Howard performing a little pre-gameshuffle.
That's not to say NBA Live 10can'thold its own. EA Sports put a lot of work into redefining itsbasketballgame. The player models and animations look outstanding, despite someoccasional choppiness. The arenas look equally amazing, and the crowdsact accordingly, spinning their towels to distract afree-throw shooterand jumping around like bonkers after someone likeLeBron James orCarmelo Anthony scores the game winner.
Although we like both games,2K10 has a slight edge because of playermodels. Where NBA Live 10'splayers appear to be life-size Ken dolls,NBA 2K10's ballers are muchmore realistic.
Winner: NBA 2K10

Live 10 has superior crowd noise, but weaker commentary. Click to see more images from the game...
Audio
GameDailyEIC Chris Buffa loves NBA Live 10's audio, especially thecrowd noiseand ambience. Hearing the crowd go berserk after a big playor boosomeone like crazy for a poor on-court performance willdefinitely pumpyou up. The on-court sound effects are authentic aswell, right down tothe sneaker squeaks and ball dribbles.
However, NBA 2K10keepsup right alongside with it. The sound effects, which have alwaysbeenauthentic, are still on the money, with plenty of player banter, soundeffects and arena music. The crowd is equally enthusiastic, shouting"MVP!" when your player goes on a hot streak and cheering whenyou scoreon a fastbreak.
As for running commentary, both games have it, but2K10 wins. LegendaryNBA broadcaster Marv Albert teams up with SteveKerr for the fifthstraight time in Live 10,andtheir banter is good, but hardly memorable. Their comments repeatwaytoo often. On 2K10, Kevin Harlan and Clark Kellogg are fun tolisten to,whether they're going off on a stolen pass or yelling"Ohhhh!" aftersomeone scores on a sick dunk. 2K Sports promises thatthe runningcommentary for 2K10 will actually evolve over the course ofthe season, but we haven't heard enough of it yet to judge.
Overall, both games have terrific sound, but 2K10 easily dominates Live 10.
Winner: NBA 2K10

We think Live 10's a lot of fun, but it doesn't compare to NBA 2K10's Shaq attack.Click to see more images from the game...
Gameplay
Botgalgames have adjustments to both offensive and defensive styles ofplay,so you can't just go in and score quickly like you did inpreviouseditions (unless, of course, you adjust the sliders in yourfavor).
NBA Live 10hasa huge advantage with its passing game. By using Freestyle PassingandDirect Pass Receiver Control, you'll have no trouble setting upyouropen man for an alley oop or getting the ball outside so he canrain athree-pointer. That's not to say that 2K Sports' passing gamecan't keepup, though. We had no problem setting up a quick outsidepass when wehad two defensivemen breathing down our necks.
As for shootingcontrols, both games handle smoothly. You'll have noproblem setting upa player for just the right three-point angle orworking your way insidefor a quick lay-up or slam dunk. One thing youmust understand, though,is that the AI defense will be ready. Botgalgames have defenses thatadjust to your plays, looking for key momentsto steal or set up ablock. They'll also spread out more effectively,so your man isn't quiteas open as you think.
That said, each game has quirks. NBA 2K10hassuperhuman players who swoop in and steal passes, while Live 10hasplayers who wander out of bounds and basketballs that seem to haveamind of their own.
Bottom line, both games play good, but NBA Live's strange ball physics make it inferior.
Winner: NBA 2K10

Regardles of which game you buy, each one has a great assortment of modes. Click to see more images from the game...
Modes
Both games are loaded with modes.  Let's start with NBA 2K10.Playerscan create their own baller in the My Player mode, taking achance onlanding with an NBA practice squad or joining the D-league.NBA Live 10follows a similar route, with a career-oriented mode whereyou learn theropes and hopefully become an NBA superstar. Both modesare cool, although you'll need to be in the right frame of mind, asthey require acertain amount of patience. There's no quick "be likeKobe Bryant"option.
In addition, each game interacts with the upcoming NBA season. NBA LivehasDynamic DNA and Dynamic Season, which follows upcoming NBA gamesandties them in to your performance, adjusting records accordingly.Thinkof it as an alternative history, putting you in control of whereyouwant to guide your team.
Not to be outdone, 2K10 has Living Rosters, which are updated everysingle day so you keep up on all the real-timetrades and action that'shappening on the court. Furthermore, if youfeel like living out one ofthe match-ups being offered on the NBAschedule, you can check into NBAToday and see what's up. We didn't havea chance to test these modesout thoroughly because, well, the NBAseason isn't in full swing yet.But both of them are in-depth and shouldoffer a lot to the casualuser. It's another tie.
Winner: Tie

There's a lot to love about NBA 2K10, both online and off. Click to see more images from the game...
Online
Overthe years, 2K proved it knows its online stuff for both Xbox Liveandthe PlayStation Network. However, it looks like EA has finallycaught upin the online arena, with a number of features for players tochoosefrom.
In NBA Live 10'sTheRun, you can put players in custom jerseys and shoes and hit thecourt, simply shooting the breeze with your friends. You can also formaBrotherhood with up to five players, taking on the world with yourownspecially formed team. Better still, the game comes with itsownexclusive practice arena, a fully decked out cyber-space known asTheHangar. Here, you can just goof off, work on your skills and haveagood time.
Not to be outdone, 2K10hasits own game in the paint. You can hop online in a series ofevents, including a Quick Game and a runaround on the NBA Blacktop, astreetcourt where you don't have to worry about large cheering crowds.2K10also has its own team effort, as you can form a Crew with up tofiveplayers (including NBA superstars) and play against other teams toseehow you fare.
Thankfully, neither game skimps on features.  As a result, we have a tie.
Winner: Tie

2K10's like Kobe: this year's champ. Click to see more images from the game...
Overall
NBA Live 10 came close to winning, but falls just short of NBA 2K10. Perhaps next year, we'll see a closer battle.  For now, though, it's all about 2K.
Winner: NBA 2K10
