I've read (and experienced) that some of you had issues with the content update as shipped on 2010-08-14. This update, consisting of the files main/z_spetz[12].iwd, was meant as a small temporary 'variety' update, replacing some of the Spetsnaz sounds with the sounds from MW2. However, what was not known at that time, is that the web server was unable to handle even so many connections for 15 MB of files.
As many people state 'oh, the updater sucks' because of this, I also have to correct these people: the updater is not the issue, the web server itself just can't handle that large an amount of people downloading files simultaneously. I could not have known this issue would occur for even 15 MB of files, as the last time such an issue occurred the files in question were 900 MB of size. Some small estimates showed that the maximum size of an update is around 'common internet connections downloading it within 30 seconds' -- otherwise it seems the web server will get overloaded, and such an overload causes a chain reaction.
Now, many people had errors from the updater like 'the operation timed out', 'hash verification failed' and 'connection timed out' -- these are all from attempting to restore the unstable and crashing web server. The update has been removed from the servers, anyone who wants to get rid of the (much better?) CoD4 sound effects can just remove z_spetz1.iwd and z_spetz2.iwd from their MW2/main/ directory.
Still, uploading of manual updates is frowned upon, as the content of these packs can not be verified, and this will cause more people to mess with the contents of the files, causing another inconsistency issue as we had before the '37a' releases. Also many of these guides completely disable updating, which causes issues like the 'we got 143' issue for other players, and as such causes a large split of the entire game.
Anyway, if somebody has space and bandwidth on a dedicated server to offer for the future 'update distribution network', please PM MaxDamage (who will be back soon) with details of the offer. Also, I'll try not to ship any more large content updates as I now know of the limitations of a single web server. |
