Backpacks let you carry 10 more items than the default 70 item limit your character starts off with. As such, they are very limited and somewhat expensive (initially). Once you have built your skills a little more (e.g.,Mercantile), you will find yourself much more flush with gold.

Apart from Gorhart, when you arrive in a new big settlement, check out the merchants and see what they have to offer.
