Total War: Rome 2's multiplayer modes have been detailed by developer Creative Assembly.

Lead designer James Russell revealed that users can take part in online campaigns, head-to-head skirmishes and co-operative matches, with up to eight players supported at once.

"What we've got with multiplayer is absolutely the core of what you would expect - all of the features and game modes of Rome 2 playable with friends, as well as ranked battles with others from around the world," he told Digital Spy.

"We have online leaderboards because people like that. They want to be the best player in the world at head-to-head Total War, and that's great.

"You can play ranked battles or unranked battles, one-on-one or up to four-vs-four. Then there's multiplayer campaign, head-to-head or co-operative modes."

Russell also confirmed that players will have access to Total War: Rome 2's entire campaign map in multiplayer mode - a first for the strategy series.

"One interesting new feature to mention - in the past you had to choose a specific map to fight on and there were only a limited number, in Rome 2 players have access to the entire campaign map," he explained.

"Players have this enormous map to battle on and can choose any point on it, so they effectively have tens of thousands of maps to select because there's such a huge variety of cities and terrain."

Total War: Rome 2 will be released for PC on September 3.
