Obstacles that have a mind of their own are hardly the definition of fun.
Update: I'm changing my review due to latest patches. The cave challenge has been adjusted and I managed to beat it. Also, there are checkpoints after beating entire sections. However, the next part with bouncing mushrooms is simply too much for a regular gamer because their placement makes you waste time and progress with each unlucky bounce. This is a game for streamers who want to entertain their viewers, so I only recommend it to them.
Little duck is swimming in a pool near a house. When it gazes into the distance and sees a tall mountain, it decides to reach the top. It quickly jumps over the fence into the river below and starts its adventure up the stream.
The gameplay is simple due to the limited space and controls. You can only move inside the river and cannot travel out onto the shore. Aside from basic movement using the directional keys, your only skills are jump and boost. Both require a certain amount of stamina, shown by the feather in the lower right corner. However, it does not interfere with gameplay because it recharges quickly.
The start is deceiving. You soon make a friend who will accompany you on your adventure, quack at certain animals and become their friend, earning an achievement, and enjoy the beautiful countryside environment. But as you reach the first and apparently only checkpoint, you realize that the journey won't be simple.
The first hurdle are rocks that do not react normally. They will spring out of the water when you attempt to pass, fly across the air and into your face, or push you back when you least expect it. Situations aren't terrible in the sense that you'll be forced all the way back to the beginning, but you may have to repeat entire parts if you're unlucky enough to get pushed back by multiple obstacles in a succession. Most of the challenges are fair and can be conquered with patience, but the game's main issue is unpredictable threats.
I'm talking about obstacles that don't follow any pattern or sequence you can take advantage of. One of them occurs in a tight tunnel with crystals on the sides. You must avoid massive boulders coming at you down the river, but they always appear at unpredictable times and patterns. Sometimes you get two in a row because one of them got stuck, or it covers the entire tunnel, leaving you with no room to avoid it.
Crystals are bouncy, so you'll be thrown all over the place and back to the beginning of the section. The final issue is that crystals cover the entire screen, making it impossible to see the approaching rock. Boost is ineffective since it is slow and cannot be used twice in a row quickly.
Stressfully difficult games can offer some fun when you are given the chance to overcome obstacles by getting learning patterns. This one doesn’t let you do that. |
