早9:01几分钟前，通用宣布了大家意料之中的事情：决定杀死庞蒂克品牌。通用决定今后主打4个牌子——雪弗莱（Chevrolet），凯迪拉克（Cadillac），GMC，和别克（Buick）。一些分析家觉得其实通用只需要两个，雪弗莱和凯迪拉克，因为日本很多公司，如丰田（Toyota），本田（Honda），日产（Nissan），在美国都主打两个品牌。但是客观的说，通用现在确实品牌少些了，比起它1908年创业之初。
通用CEO说悍马（Hummer）和土星（Saturn）将会在今年年底（2009年年底）脱手，庞蒂克（Pontiac）则2010年。Fritz Henderson，通用的CEO说，品牌之间“只能相互竞争却不能同仇敌忾”，他说通用从没有打算以庞蒂克取胜的路子，而庞蒂克品牌背后也根本没有能在市场竞争需要的两把刷子。

Our colleagues at DealBook are live-blogging the Monday morning news conference by Fritz Henderson, president and chief executive of General Motors:

9:01 a.m.| A few minutes ago, G.M. said what everybody expected: it is killing the Pontiac brand. It expects to go forward with four brands — Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC and Buick. Some analysts think all G.M. needs is two — Chevrolet and Cadillac — since Japanese companies, like Toyota, Honda, and Nissan — primarily have two brands in the U.S. But to put this in perspective, G.M. will now have fewer brands than it did when it started in 1908.

G.M. chief executive says Hummer and Saturn will be gone by the end of 2009; Pontiac goes away by 2010. Fritz Henderson, G.M.’s chief executive, says brands “only play offense well. They don’t play defense well.” He says G.M. didn’t have a strategy to win with Pontiac, nor could it put the market muscle it needed behind the brand.
